THERMOES :: PASSIVE COOLING HEADWEAR
THERMOES :: PASSIVE COOLING HEADWEAR
A slick solution to overheating for athletes and distance runners.
THE FACTS:
When humans run, we produce heat. We sweat to remove muscle heat, but add environmental heat, and the body has to balance two things: the performance you want from your running and keeping the body from getting overheated.
Is it possible to design a solution to increase performance at high temperatures?
CURRENT TECHNOLOGIES
We have strategies and technologies that help marathoners stay cool. They pour cold water over their heads and may run with a cool cloth on their neck or head.
Air conditioning technology cycles freon through cold and warm areas to dissipate warm air from a room.
What if there were glasses that could take advantage of this technology?
INSPIRATION AND LOOK
Thermoes are meant for athletes and endurance running.
I wanted a unique silhouette that conveys to the audience that "thermoes make you fast."
Looking back into design in the early 2000s and at Gentle Monster & Oakley's futuristic and tech-inspired eyewear for inspiration.
I looked for unique shapes that not only looked fast but were also able to hide any cooling technology inside.
HOW WOULD THERMOES WORK?
Designs feature grilles in the front to passively use air while running to dissipate heat from the freon tubes. The freon naturally circulates through the runner's motion and the natural tendency for fluid to move from cool areas to warm.
CONCEPTS :: WHAT COULD THIS LOOK LIKE:
I tried to cast a wide net here.
Although it was meant to be eyewear, we want to also maximise surface area for cooling.
Some designs may focus on look, while others may prioritize comfort or cooling efficiency.
These designs feature diagrams to show how the freon will flow from the radiator to the rest of the glasses.
