SwapSpecs is an interactive wearable toy designed to spark an interest in exploration for 6-year-olds.
OVERVIEW :: Final Toy
The glossy blue pair of glasses is designed to fit the proportion and features of a six-year-old’s head.
Tt’s made up of a durable and flexible plastic body, with an adjustable elastic headband.
The lenses are removable and interchangeable.
Allowing the child to experience reality from a unique perspective!
RESEARCH :: Early Ideation
SwapSpecs was designed to align with the CDC’s developmental milestones for 6-year-old children.
It also helps them develop:
Exploration and outdoor play
Independence and solo play
Curiosity and spatial awareness
Creative thinking
It also fits well within their interests:
Nature and the world around them
The “why” and how things work
The toy is less about the shape of the glasses (frames could come in different shapes and colors) and instead more about the technology in the lenses.
As long as the lenses have the same basic shape, they could be interchangeable to create hundreds of viewing opportunities
Such as:
Magnifying and telescopic lenses
Diffusion (turning lights into shapes)
Distortion (fishbowl, kaleidoscope, et)
Snowglobe and similar lenses
Various colors and color-mixing lenses
Tinted and polarized lenses
CONCEPTS :: Prototyping and Design Choices
Lenses retain the same overall shape
However, the handles for easy removal vary depending on what the lens actually does
Magnifying Lens
Star Diffraction
Heart Diffraction
Besides the three random pairs of lenses included when you buy the frames, the rest of the lenses would be sold individually inside "mystery packs," creating excitement and emphasizing collectability along with the ability to trade with friends and peers.
Inside the instruction manual, there will be slots to hold the lenses and a blank space for kids to write notes and the name of what the lens does.
The final shape of the frames and lens technology:
Provides enough space to hold the lens
Comfortable and will not slide off
Playful and communicates "TOY"
The nose bridge and opening cater towards the nose of children
TESTING :: Sizing and fit
Flat, not suited to head
Angle of frames
Small and no arms
