Plaza is a table designed for the owner of an eclectic and curated living space.
Featuring a catch-all and secret compartment that raises and lowers to allow additional seating.
OVERVIEW :: Final Table
Plaza is designed to be adaptable to many spaces, allowing customization & adaptability.
The prototype is made of birch ply, with a sage and white embroidered upholstery pattern
The tabletop features a string that can be lifted up and down.
Allowing the user to seamessly lift and lower the tabletop!
RESEARCH :: Spaces to Design For
Finding spaces to design in helps find a Spacial Persona.
This table should belong in a room that is the definition of perfection in imperfection.
Note the low and plush furniture, wood floors, and the traditional and well-worn
design elements. The space is meant to feel lived in.
The space is well lit, with large entry spaces and windows. The lamps and colors make the room feel warm and inviting.
The space is meant to show the personality of the end user. With memorable items strewn throughout. The space feels full but not cluttered.
Using these images, we can infer what the user needs and how to design for them.
DIRECT USER TRAITS
• Tells a story about himself in the

his personality.
• Fills his room with mementos and
memorable items.
IMPLIED USER TRAITS

with others.
• Appreciates art and traditional furniture.
• Realizes not everything should be displayed always
• Owns many things
IMPLIED NEEDS
• Needs to display and keep items
• Needs to fit with current room
• Needs to be visually interesting but functional
CONCEPTS :: Prototyping and Design Direction
6 distinct ideas emerged from this research. All follow the same guidelines for need and use
01: A rising and lowering table with a light inside
02: A rising and lowering table with a secret compartment inside
03: A metal table with holes for hanging paper items
04: A table with extended storage and a peek hole to add mystery
05: A table that uses a clock as a secret hiding space
06: A table that uses a net as the main display for items
04: in a round profile
01, 02: Hand Embroidery Pattern
02: Profile
03: Scale model
05: scale model
TESTING :: Mechanism Prototyping
I designed a life size model using carboard and foam core to prototype interaction and size.
Initial mechanism featured a string and pulley system to raise the table. It needed tighter tolerances and more friction to keep the tabletop up.
BUILDING :: Full-Scale Materials and Construction
Main parts needed tight tolerances, so most wood was cut using the CNC
The sown column needed to be made and placed in before final glueup
FINAL :: End Photos and Finishing
